Quotation for Today, Friday 23 October

Despite the biggest financial bust in two decades which wiped squillions off the value of shareholders’ investments worldwide and exposed a lot of shonky practices, Diplock’s commission seems to be focused on using its “surveillance cycle” exercises to educate companies about the greater compliance standards they now have to meet under (NZ) International Financial Reporting Standards instead of publicly throwing the book at delinquents. Moving Toward Business By Referral

It’s been a little bit of a mind-bending week here at All Phoenix Real Estate central. After many, many months of delay I finally sat down to listen to classes taught by Brian Buffini about migrating my real estate business to one that is, if not exclusively by referral, is driven by that dynamic. These lessons have led me to a rare week of reflection and organization.  My mindset always has been that any day that doesn’t involve an accepted contract is a failure, which clearly is mental. Family Forced into Poverty to Insure Daughter

This post is written by Natalie O'Reilly and crossposted from Hipmama.org . I'm writing this today, not because I see myself as a political activist, but because our daughter lives with an on-going, critical need for healthcare, and because I want everyone to be able to put a face to the idea of healthcare reform. And what better face than our goofy, gorgeous, brave baby girl's? Anyone who has ever met my daughter knows that she is just about the most lovable and kind person ever born. [more...]

How To Say No With The Empathy Sandwich

I ‘ve been turning down a lot of commitments lately.  I have no doubt that this upsets some people, but there are only so many options one has when reducing external commitments.  The way I see it, it’s simply a matter of emptying my commitment “bucket” and there are two ways to do this.  You either have to: Reduce or remove a current commitment from the bucket (moderately difficult) or Decline new commitments as they come in, or come up for renewal (easier). Isaiah Thomas Riled by Comments in Magic Johnson's Soon-to-be-Released Book "When The Game Was Ours"

Magic Johnson has been relatively drama free since we all got over the shock of his explosive revelation that he was HIV positive. He has done pretty well for himself as a mover and a shaker in the business and philanthropic circles, but now comes a new drama in the pages of a soon-to-be-released book, "When The Game Was Ours," which he co-wrote with Larry Bird and author Jackie MacMullan. The book, to be released on Nov. 4, tells the inside story of the most important rivalry in basketball history. [more...]

Fed releases comments about bank risk/compensation packages

The Fed has issued a statement saying they are beginning a review of the compensation policies at 28 large banks and 3002 smaller banks.  They cite in the release that banks compensation practices led to excessive risk taking  that helped lead to losses and instability.  They ordered banks to address risk, compensation and address any deficiencies in each.  This news is nothing a reasonable person would assume.   It is somewhat sad banks have to be regulated additionally, even if one  can blame [more...]

Windows 7 Launch Event Review and Photos

The launch event for Windows 7 has just finished in New York and it’s been on a much smaller scale than previous launches. This time there was no huge stage and no big screen presentations, no rock band and no multiple speakers. Not even the customary long list of thanking the development team. Public Strongly Supports Dem Effort To Open Insurance Industry To Competition

This is the first polling I’ve seen on the issue, and it shows very strong public support for the new push by Dem Congressional leaders to strip the insurance companies of their exemption from anti-trust laws: Anti-trust laws are intended to prevent companies and other business entities from working together in ways that limit competition.
